What’s at Stake?

“MenEngage Network Tanzania is a network of non-governmental organizations that consider gender equality with a focus on men and boys involvement based in Tanzania. CDF is a part of the MenEngage global association under the regional network MenEngage Africa”

CDF has put gender equality, children’s rights and women’s empowerment at the heart of its programming. Working to achieve this goal implies that there must be a shift in gender norms. In order to accomplish this, CDF has to work with men and boys as key partners and allies. We seek to involve men and boys as part of the solution to gender inequality. We need to address men as allies who benefit from improved gender relations and with positive attitudes towards promotion of children and women rights in CDF targeted areas.

CDF as a member of Men Engage Africa Network and secretariat of MenEngage Tanzania Network believe that working with men and boys is one key to achieving gender equality and end gender based violence and other harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation and Child marriage. In order to improve our programing and learn with others, we do believe that Men and boys need to be taught the consequences of Gender Based Violence (GBV). If they choose to speak about it, they can make a change. In many societies, men are decision makers thus our programs are considering getting more men and boys coming on board to speak out against GBV and other forms of violence and promoting women’s and children rights.

What we’re Doing

MenEngage Tanzania (MET) is an umbrella network that brings together 18 partner organization’s that work towards engaging men and boys to promote gender equality and end gender based violence within Tanzania.

The network was established in November, 2014 following series of consultative meetings among the secretariat (Children’s Dignity Forum) and Sonke Gender Justice.

Objectives:

  • To promote inter- and intra-network collaboration between MenEngage partner organisations on issues related to engaging men and boys for gender equality, health and human rights.
  • To improve capacity of MenEngage partner organisations to engage men and boys for gender equality, health and human rights.
  • To strengthen coordination among MenEngage partner organisations, Government, development partners and other stakeholders at all levels.
  • To mobilize constituencies of MenEngage partner organisations for common advocacy goals.

Our Success

“The extent of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation on children is shocking, and most children are forced to drop out of school and work on very low wages to help parents get income to feed the family and sometimes fend for their needs”

Since 2014/2017, MET continued with the implementation of activities with the primary goal of promoting the involvement of men and boys in achieving gender equality, ending gender based violence and preventing FGM and child marriage in all levels across Tanzania.

This has been done through;

  1. Community campaign with a focus on FGM and child marriage and Gender Based Violence (GBV).
  2. Sensitization session with religious and traditional leaders.
  3. Conducting policy scan on Law of Marriage Act 1971, Education policy, SRHR policy and Nation Constitution.
  4. Conducting meeting with MET members and steering committee members.
  5. Designing and print of MET advocacy materials
  6. Updating MET webpage, conducting radio sessions and newspaper articles documentation.
  7. Collaborating with Tanzania Ending Child Marriage Network (TECMN) to meet with key parliamentarian committee.
  8. Press conference
  9. Capacity Building and Knowledge Exchange Workshop
